Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence
A National Recognition for Excellence in Learning, Leadership, and Community
The halls of Danbury Elementary are glowing a little brighter these days. The school has been officially named a 2025 National Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School by the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence (BRSE)... a rare and prestigious national honor recognizing the top 1% of schools across the country for their commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and community engagement.
This distinction follows an extensive on-site review of Danbury’s learning environment, instruction, leadership, and school culture. Evaluators found evidence of exceptional collaboration, innovative teaching, and a powerful sense of belonging among students, staff, and families — a true reflection of Danbury’s core values: Leadership, Accountability, Kindness, Excellence, Relationships, and Service.
A Community Rooted in Excellence and Heart
Superintendent Ms. Cari Buehler called the recognition a “tremendous reflection of the people who make Danbury what it is.”
“This is about our shared vision…learning within a collaborative culture that’s results-driven,” Buehler said. “When our daily work is guided by leadership, accountability, kindness, excellence, relationships, and service, amazing things happen for our students. This recognition is proof that when we live our values, we achieve excellence together.”
Elementary Principal Mr. Dan Humphrey added that the school’s success comes from a culture where “everyone knows every child by name and every child feels valued.” The BRSE review confirmed this, noting Danbury’s exceptionally positive climate, staff collaboration, and strong academic practices across all nine performance categories… from student engagement and leadership development to technology integration and community partnerships.
Students and Families at the Center
Feedback from students, parents, and teachers echoed one clear theme: Danbury feels like family. Parents spoke of “teachers who know when a child is having a rough day,” “staff who personalize learning for every student,” and “a community that wraps around families with kindness and care.” Students described the school as a place where “everyone is kind,” “learning is fun and hands-on,” and “teachers always find a way to help you when you’re sad”.
A Model for Schools Nationwide
As a National Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School, Danbury Elementary will serve as a model of innovation and excellence for schools across the nation. This prestigious honor has been awarded to fewer than 1% of Ohio school districts in the past three years; Danbury is the first school in Ottawa County to receive it. Over the next five years, Danbury will be featured on the BRSE website and invited to present at their national conference on best practices in leadership development, academic rigor, and student engagement.

This achievement also underscores the district’s broader commitment to continuous improvement. In the BRSE assessment, Danbury earned outstanding scores in categories such as student focus and support, technology integration, school culture, and community partnerships, validating years of intentional work from teachers, administrators, and support staff.
Celebrating the Lakers’ Legacy
“This honor belongs to our entire community,” Superintendent Cari Buehler added. “It celebrates the collaboration of students, staff, parents, and partners who believe in our vision and live our values each day. At Danbury, we truly believe that together, we can all be better.”
Danbury’s recognition was formally celebrated at the National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Conference on December 4, 2025, where the school will be recognized among the nation’s top-performing institutions for its unwavering commitment to students and community.
A Lighthouse of Learning
This award shines a light on what Danbury has always believed: that small schools can do big things when guided by shared purpose and heart. From personalized learning to deep community connections, Danbury Elementary continues to be a place where students are known, nurtured, and inspired to lead, not just in the classroom, but in life.
