Model PLC at Work

Model PLC at Work

Danbury Elementary School has earned national recognition as a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work®  — one of the most respected distinctions in education for schools committed to high levels of learning, collaboration, student achievement, and continuous improvement.

Danbury Elementary School is only the second elementary school in Ohio to receive this National distinction, with the last Ohio recipient earning the recognition in 2017. This honor places Danbury among an elite group of schools and districts nationwide recognized for building systems that ensure students not only thrive but also learn at the highest level!

So, what does this really mean for Danbury students and families?

It means that behind every elementary classroom, lesson, intervention, enrichment opportunity, and student success story is an entire team of educators working together intentionally and collaboratively to support children academically, socially, and emotionally.

At Danbury, staff do not work in isolation. They collaborate regularly to:

  • Identify the most important learning standards,
  • monitor student progress,
  • share instructional strategies,
  • provide timely support when students struggle,
  • and create additional opportunities for students ready to be challenged further.

This process ensures that students receive the support they need at the right time — and that no child slips through the cracks.

“Families trust us with what matters most — their children,” said Dan Humphrey, Elementary Principal. “This recognition reflects the deep care our staff has for students and the commitment we share to helping every child succeed. At Danbury, our students are known individually, supported intentionally, and encouraged every day to reach their full potential.”

The Model PLC designation is not simply an award application or honorary title. Schools and districts must provide evidence of sustained student growth, collaborative practices, intervention systems, and measurable results over time. The recognition validates that Danbury Elementary’s systems and practices are making a meaningful impact on student learning and achievement.

For families, this recognition means confidence.

Confidence that:

  • students are supported by educators who work as a team,
  • learning decisions are driven by student needs,
  • intervention happens proactively,
  • enrichment opportunities are intentional,
  • and every child is known, valued, and supported.

It also reflects something deeper about the culture of Danbury Local Schools.

Danbury Local Schools are driven to provide a personal educational experience where relationships matter, communication is strong, and students are truly seen. But what makes Danbury stand out is how that close-knit culture is paired with high expectations, intentional systems, and a shared commitment to excellence.

This recognition demonstrates that Danbury is not only a school district with caring people — it is a district with highly effective practices that produce results for students.

The work of a PLC centers around four essential questions:

  • What do we want students to learn?
  • How will we know if they learned it?
  • What will we do if they need additional support?
  • What will we do if they are ready for more?

At Danbury, those questions guide daily decisions in classrooms across the district.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, students, families, and community,” said Ms. Cari Buehler, Superintendent. “It represents countless hours of collaboration, reflection, and commitment to doing what is best for kids. We are incredibly proud of the culture we have built together and grateful for the trust our families place in us every day.”

The recognition also reinforces Danbury’s mission and vision of fostering a collaborative culture focused on learning and results. While many schools talk about collaboration, the Model PLC process requires districts to demonstrate that collaboration is embedded into the way the school operates — and that it directly impacts student success.

For students, this means:

  • stronger academic support systems,
  • more individualized attention,
  • quicker intervention when challenges arise,
  • meaningful opportunities for enrichment and growth,
  • consistent learning expectations,
  • and a school community committed to helping every child succeed.

For families, it means knowing their children are part of a district where adults continuously work together, learn from one another, and stay focused on what matters most: student growth and success.

This achievement belongs to the entire Danbury community — educators, staff, students, families, board members, and community partners — all of whom play an important role in creating an environment where students can learn, grow, lead, and thrive.

Danbury Elementary is honored to receive this national recognition and remains committed to building upon this work to provide exceptional opportunities and experiences for every student, every day.
